Tips for writing a great statement of purpose (SOP) essay

Do you need to write a statement of purpose (SOP) essay? Think of it as your opportunity to stand out from the rest of your high school seniors and international students vying for a spot at your university. It’s your chance to show off your unique personality, academic interests, leadership skills and accomplishments. So how do you go about writing a great SOP essay? Check out our top tips below!

1. Start early

Start early and give yourself plenty of time to write your essay. This isn’t something you can do last minute. Give yourself at least a month to brainstorm, write, and edit your essay. Don’t rely on others to help you. The best SOP’s are authentic and come from the heart so it’s important that you put in the time and effort required.

2. Be honest

Admissions committees can tell when someone is not being authentic. Be genuine in your writing and let your personality and true self shine through.

3. Do your research

Learn about the programs you’re applying for and tailor your essay to each one. Show that you know what they’re looking for and demonstrate qualities that match the criteria.

4. Be specific

Don’t just say you want to go to university because you love learning. Why do you want to pursue this particular degree? What are your long-term career goals? How will this degree help you achieve them? Articulate what your ambitions are and why this program will help you achieve that.

5. Be concise

Your SOP essay should be no more than two pages long and double-spaced. Admissions committees have thousands of essays to read, so make sure yours is clear and to the point and grammatically correct.

6. Edit, edit, edit!

Before you submit your essay, ask someone else to proofread your essay and give you feedback. Then, take the time to revise and proofread your work again. Typos and grammatical errors will make you look careless and unprofessional. They are not looked upon favourably. Make sure you check and double check your grammar and spelling.

7. Tell your story

Personal stories can be very effective in SOP essays. They help the reader connect with you on a personal level and understand your motivations for pursuing further studies. It also gives them a picture of how you would fit in with the university community which is a major concern for them.

8. Use strong verbs

Weak, passive verbs make your writing sound boring and dull. Choose active, powerful words that pack a punch and keep the reader engaged. Remember they read 1000’s of essays. The language you use needs to be powerful and engaging.

9. Be positive

Admissions committees want to see candidates who are excited about their chosen field of study and who have a positive attitude. Avoid negativity and focus on why you’re a great fit for the program.

10. Follow the instructions

Make sure you follow all of the instructions and essay guidelines provided by the admissions committee. If they say to limit your essay to two pages and give you a maximum word count, don’t go over it. If they ask for specific information, be sure to include it.

11. Be prepared to revise your essay

Admissions committees may request revisions if they feel like something is missing from your essay or if they want to see more of your writing skills. Be open to making changes and be prepared to resubmit if requested.

Following these tips will help you write a strong SOP essay that will improve your chances of successful admission. If you are planning on studying abroad and confused about how to write an SOP, contact a Gradstar representative today for more information on how to get started. Good luck!
