The UK Graduate Route Visa- What's Changed for 2026 and What It Means for You
The UK's Graduate Route visa remains one of the most flexible post-study work options available to international graduates, and it's a key reason why study in the UK continues to attract top candidates from India year after year.
Here's what's current for 2026:
After completing a bachelor's or master's degree at a licensed UK university, you can remain in the UK for 2 years to work or look for work, in any role, with any employer. PhD graduates get 3 years. There's no sponsorship requirement, no minimum salary threshold, and you can switch into skilled worker routes directly from the Graduate visa if you secure an eligible role.
What does this mean practically? If you're targeting global firms in London, Manchester, or Edinburgh, or want to build international work experience before returning to India, the Graduate Route gives you real runway. Many GradStars have used this period to secure roles in consulting, technology, and healthcare, then transitioned into longer-term UK immigration routes.
Key 2026 update: The UK government has continued to monitor Graduate Route utilisation closely. Applications remain subject to the requirement that your degree comes from a UKVI-licensed institution; all GradStar partner universities qualify.

Your Application Timeline
The UK primarily runs on a single major intake (September/October), which means the pressure to apply early is real. Here's what your 2026-27 application timeline should look like:
- Now - July 2026: Shortlist universities, prepare SOP drafts, and take or retest IELTS if needed. Many universities still have places available for September 2026 entry; contact GradStar immediately if you're targeting this cycle.
- July - September 2026: Finalise applications for January 2027 intake (available at select universities). Ideal for students who want more time to strengthen their profile or who received conditional offers for the September cycle.
- October - December 2026: Begin applications for September 2027 entry. Getting in early for this cycle gives you the strongest shot at merit scholarships, many of which close by December.
A January 2027 intake, while less common, is available at many of GradStar's partner universities, including the University of Sunderland, University of Hertfordshire, and Coventry University. Ask your consultant if this is the right path for you.
