UK Graduate Route post-study work rights
| Qualification | Applications on or before 31 Dec 2026 | Applications on or after 1 Jan 2027 |
| Bachelor Degree | 3-4 years | 18 months |
| Master's (taught or research) | 2 years | 18 months |
| Doctoral Degree (PhD) | 3 years | 3 years (unaffected) |
Why the UK Graduate Route stands out
- No job offer or Certificate of Sponsorship needed to apply
- You can work in most jobs, look for work, or be self-employed
- You can switch to the sponsored Skilled Worker route from within the UK
- You can’t extend this visa route, so a lot of graduates use this time to work toward getting a longer-term visa.
- If you apply before the December 31, 2026 deadline, you still get the full two-year stay if you’re not a doctoral graduate.
Part-time work rights during your studies
| Period | Maximum Work Hours | Minimum Hourly Wage (from 1 April 2026) |
| Term Time, degree-level course | Up to 20 hours per week | GBP 12.71/hour (National Living Wage, age 21+) |
| Term Time, below degree level | Up to 10 hours per week | GBP 12.71/hour (age 21+) |

Many students work part-time, like a student ambassador, work in the library, make coffee as a barista, work in the university catering, admin work, work as a peer tutor, receptionist, work in the shops, cafes or restaurants.
If you’re on a Student visa, you can’t do freelance work, gig economy jobs, self-employment, or play professional sports. Just stick to regular part-time jobs, and you’re good.
High graduate employability
UK graduates are known for landing good jobs. Employers everywhere respect UK degrees, so you’ve got opportunities whether you stay in the UK, head back to India, or look for work abroad.
Names like Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, and LSE come up again and again in QS employer surveys; they’re recognized as some of the best places for recruiting graduates. If you’re interested in fields like finance, consulting, tech, healthcare, engineering, or pharma, these universities really open doors.
Career opportunities after graduation
After graduation, there’s strong demand in the UK for people with skills in finance, consulting, AI, cybersecurity, IT, engineering, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, business, law, renewable energy, education, and data analytics.
