students are taking IELTS academic exams

Most students planning to study abroad know they need IELTS. What trips people up is which version to take. Pick the wrong one and your university application gets rejected, even if your score is excellent.

This guide breaks down IELTS Academic vs General Training: what each involves, what scores universities and visa authorities ask for in 2026, and exactly how to decide which one applies to you.

Quick stats:

  • 12,500+ organisations worldwide accept IELTS

  • 6.0 is the minimum IELTS Academic band for the Australia Subclass 500 visa in 2026

  • ₹19,000 is the IELTS exam fee in India (Academic & General, from April 2026)

  • Band 6 is the average IELTS score for Indian test-takers

What Is the IELTS English Exam?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures English language ability across four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Results are reported on a band scale of 1 to 9. There is no pass or fail; institutions simply set the minimum band they require.

IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council and Cambridge Assessment English. In India, test dates are available multiple times per month at centres across the country.

There are two core versions: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. A third variant, IELTS for UKVI, uses the same content but with additional security protocols required for specific UK visa categories.

IELTS Academic vs General Training: The Core Difference

The simplest way to think about it: Academic is for university entry. General Training is for immigration and work visas.

Both tests share identical Listening and Speaking sections; same format, same timing, same scoring. The difference is entirely in Reading and Writing.

IELTS Academic Reading: What to Expect

The Academic reading section contains three long passages drawn from academic books, journals, and magazines; science, technology, social science, and arts. You don't need specialist knowledge, but you do need to read quickly and precisely.

Common question types: multiple choice, matching headings, True/False/Not Given, and sentence completion. Passages get progressively harder.

IELTS Academic Writing: Task 1 and Task 2

Task 1 requires you to summarise and describe visual data: a bar chart, line graph, table, pie chart, map, or process diagram. At least 150 words, around 20 minutes. Examiners assess how accurately you select and compare data, not your opinion.

Task 2 is an essay responding to an argument, problem, or point of view; identical in both Academic and General Training. At least 250 words, around 40 minutes. Task 2 carries more weight in the final Writing band score.

Key 2026 update for Australia: The Department of Home Affairs raised the minimum IELTS Academic score for the Subclass 500 student visa to an overall band of 6.0, with no individual band below 5.5. IELTS Online (at-home) is not accepted for visa purposes; you must sit at a physical test centre.

For Russell Group universities in the UK, requirements sit between 6.5 and 7.5 overall. Oxford and Cambridge typically require 7.5 with no component below 7.0. Treat the university's own requirement as your target, not the visa minimum.

"One of the most common mistakes Indian students make is booking the wrong IELTS module. If your goal is a degree programme, you need Academic, full stop. General Training will not be accepted by universities for degree-level admission, and there is no way to convert the score afterwards." British Council, international student admissions guidance

Which IELTS Test Should You Take?

The decision is almost always determined by your goal, not by which test seems easier.

Take IELTS Academic if you are:

  • Applying to an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme anywhere

  • Applying to a professional licensing body (medicine, nursing, engineering)

  • Applying for a student visa in Australia, the UK, New Zealand, or Finland

  • Seeking scholarships that require academic English evidence

  • Unsure; when in doubt, Academic is the safer choice

Take IELTS General Training if you are:

  • Applying for permanent residency or a skilled migration visa (Australia, Canada)

  • Applying for a work permit or employer-sponsored visa

  • Enrolling in a vocational or short-course programme (not a degree)

  • Applying for secondary school in an English-speaking country

Canada exception: Some Express Entry streams accept IELTS General Training for immigration. However, if you plan to study in Canada first, then move toward PR, take IELTS Academic; it works for both your student visa and your academic application.

A note on IELTS for UKVI: if applying to study in the UK below degree level (Foundation, A-levels) or for specific visa categories, you may need IELTS for UKVI rather than standard Academic. The content is identical; the difference is how it's administered. Fee in India: ₹19,250.

A 7.5 IELTS score corresponds to C1 on the CEFR scale; a strong result that meets entry requirements for virtually all universities worldwide. A score of 7.0 places you roughly in the 85th percentile of all test-takers globally.

The average IELTS score for Indian students is around Band 6.0. Writing and Speaking tend to be weaker sections; Listening and Reading typically score higher. Targeted preparation in Academic Writing Task 1 makes a significant difference to your overall band.

How to Prepare for the IELTS Academic Test in 2026

Preparation for IELTS Academic is different from General Training because the Reading and Writing sections require specific skills that don't come naturally from everyday English use. The good news: with the right coaching and structured practice, most students see meaningful score improvement within 6-8 weeks.

Reading

Read academic articles regularly; science news sites, The Economist, university blogs. Practice skimming for main ideas and scanning for specifics. Target 20 minutes per passage.

Writing Task 1

Practice describing charts, graphs, and tables. Focus on the language of comparison — increase, decrease, proportion, peak. No opinions in Task 1. Cover the most significant trends and at least one specific data comparison.

Writing Task 2

Study model essays at Band 7 and 8 to understand structure and vocabulary range. Practice planning in under 5 minutes before writing. Task 2 carries more weight; invest more preparation time here than in Task 1.

Practice Tests

Use official IELTS materials from ielts.org or Cambridge IELTS Academic books. Timed mock tests under real conditions give the most accurate picture of where you stand.

Get Structured Coaching

Self-study takes you a long way, but structured guidance accelerates your progress significantly, especially for Writing. Gradstar Global's IELTS Test Prep programme is designed specifically for Indian students targeting universities in Australia, the UK, Germany, New Zealand, and Finland. If you're based in Maharashtra, our IELTS coaching in Mumbai offers in-person and hybrid sessions with experienced trainers who know exactly what Band 7+ requires.

One practical point: IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date. Plan your test date so your score is still valid when your visa or university application is submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IELTS Academic test?

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?

Listening and Speaking tests are identical. Academic uses complex academic texts in Reading and requires data description in Writing Task 1. General Training uses everyday texts and a letter for Task 1. Academic = university. General Training = immigration/work visas.

Is IELTS Academic harder than General Training?

Generally yes. Academic Reading uses more complex texts requiring higher inference. Writing Task 1, describing charts, is a specific skill most students find harder than letter-writing.

Is a 7.5 IELTS score B2 or C1?

C1. B2 maps to approximately Band 5.5-6.5. A 7.5 meets the entry requirements for most top-ranked universities globally.

What IELTS Academic score do I need for an Australian student visa in 2026?

Overall 6.0, with no individual band below 5.5 (Subclass 500). Most universities require higher; 6.5 for undergraduate, 6.5-7.0 for postgraduate. Online/at-home IELTS is not accepted for Australian visa purposes.

Depends on the country. Australia accepts it for some skilled migration streams. Canada's Express Entry accepts both Academic and General Training. For UK immigration visas (not student visas), General Training is typically required.
